You should make a new will and related documents, or revise your existing documents if:
- You have put off ever making a Will.
- Your marital status changes. Usually, you will want your new spouse to be named in your estate planning documents. And usually, you will want your ex-spouse to be removed from your estate planning documents. You may also want to make changes in who is designated as guardian for your minor children or trustee of your estate.
- The number of your children changes. While your estate planning documents will usually automatically take care of additional children, this is a good time to make sure that the documents correctly reflect your current desires.
- You have moved from one state to another. Each state has particular requirements for each of the various estate planning documents. Your estate planning documents should be revised to make sure that they comply with your new state's laws.
